Amazon.com Not to be mistaken with Bill Withers's Greatest Hits or even the 1994 best-of with which it shares its name, Lean on Me nevertheless shares much with those two earlier retrospectives--notably the likes of such '70s soul-pop gems as the title track, "Ain't No Sunshine," "Lovely Day," and "Use Me." Like the earlier Lean on Me, this remastered selection includes 18 tracks, 13 of which overlap with the '94 set. Withers's oeuvre is something less than expansive: he recorded 10 albums for Sussex and Columbia between 1971 and 1985, then gracefully exited the business with three top 10 hits to his credit. The singer's warm vocals and wise lyrics have held up splendidly through the years, making him a likely candidate for periodic rediscovery. This anthology stands as the title of choice for the next wave of soul fans Withers wins over. --Steven Stolder

Still Bill's music never sounded better July 27, 2010 New England Pat (Virginia, USA) Bill Withers was one of the best singers of the 1970s who was somehow always overlooked by other singers and groups who invariably faded after one or two songs. Bill's voice and guitar conveyed sympathy for unwed mothers and told stories of unrequited love with the voice of experience or mother wit and that there was always a brighter tomorrow, no matter bad things were. This CD is a fine tribute to a man who sang R&B with a country singer's approach who had a string of hits during his long and successful career. All the hits are here but unknown gems are included, such as "Hello Like Before", "I Want to Spend the Night" and "Watching You Watching Me". The only drawback with this collection is why the producers didn't include the unedited version of "Just the Two of Us" with Grover Washington Jr. Still, this CD is destined to be a classic.
Bill Withers Lean On Me July 6, 2010 eliane The first 9 or so songs on this 18 track CD are fantastic - brilliant, works of art. You couldn't write better songs, and I don't think anyone else who has covered them has ever managed to come close to how well Bill and his band play them. 'Use Me' and 'When I'm Kissing My Love' are, for me, masterpieces of cool.
Unfortunately, the rest of the album doesn't meet this standard by any stretch of the imagination. Turgid, is the word that comes to mind.
But still, it was well worth it for the first half of the CD.
very nice....for the price !! February 26, 2010 favaretto claudio Bill Whiters is not just "Ain't no Sunshine" this i a very good collections of his best at a bargain price !!
Great CD February 13, 2010 J. Carey (oregon) I'm not sure that Bill Withers gets the respect due him for all of the great music he put out but this is a good way to get started with his music. There are so many great cuts on this CD that I hate to try to pick any favorites but how can you not love, Lovely Day, Ain't No Sunshine, Grandma's Hands, Lean On Me etc.
This is a must have collection for anybody who loves music and good song writing.
The magnificent Bill Withers...a real inspiration.... February 7, 2010 Grigory's Girl (NYC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bill Withers is an incredible inspiration. He's the epitome of the late bloomer. He didn't start his music career until his 30's. Most musicians start around their teens years, but not Bill. After some lean years, he was finally signed in 1970, and the hits happened relatively quickly. When Bill bloomed, he bloomed like no one before him. His rich baritone and deep sense of soul is still moving and beautiful today. The music hasn't dated at all.
This album has all his signature songs from Ain't No Sunshine to his magisterial Lean on Me. No matter how many times you hear Lean on Me, it's still as moving as the first time you've heard it. It also shows that many popular songs don't have to be repetitve and hollow. It also has some gems like Grandma's Hands (which I first heard on Gil Scott-Heron's Reflections album) that aren't really as well known as the other tunes.
Bill Withers shows that it is never too late to follow a dream, or to follow that voice inside you that says there's something better out there, and that you have to follow your intuition and heart to fullfill yourself.
