4 out of 5 stars SHE BROUGHT IT   September 7, 2010
KDub (Atlanta, GA)
I'M SO GLAD MONICA DID HER THANG ON THIS ALBUM...HER LAST PROJECTS (I LIKED THEM) WERE NOT VERY SUCCESSFUL SO THIS WAS A MAKE OR BREAK MOMENT FOR HER I BELIEVE. HER VOICE IS STILL GREAT AND SHE HAS SOME VERY GOOD SONGS. "LOVE ALL OVER ME" IS MY FAVORITE(AND IS GETTING PLENTY OF AIR PLAY ON THE RADIO). VERY GOOD SOULFUL SINGING.

4 out of 5 stars Still Standing - 4.5 stars   August 29, 2010
Geminigirl (Philadelphia, PA United States)
I enjoyed watching Monica's reality show - especially the scenes in the studio & her meeting with the label regarding which single would lead this project. Monica has been one of my favorite young divas since she debuted @ the age of 14 - she has always been herself and hasn't changed into some type of industry puppet to suit the new millenium record label bosses.

I admit to having been underwhelmed by her last release - although the ballads were great & she sounded great, that project felt and still feels very disjointed to me. I know that Monica is still a young woman and although it's too early to put her in the adult contemporary category, stronger songwriting is needed for uptempo tracks to really showcase her vocally. This collection is ballad heavy but I think these songs perfectly show off her beautiful voice.

The album gets off to a great start with the autobiographical STILL STANDING f/ Ludacris - being familiar with the track as the theme for her show, this was an excellent 1st single. The lyrics take listeners on a journey of Monica's life both in & out of the business and is an excellent way for her to reintroduce herself to old and new fans.

The next track, ONE IN A LIFETIME is the only track that I still really don't like. It's a little to overproduced and as many times as I've listened to it, I just don't like this track.

STAY OR GO is a track that I kinda like - it features really honest lyrics set to a very restrained stripped down musical arrangement.

EVERYTHING TO ME - strong lead single! What more could you ask for? - Monica's powerful vocals, the beautiful lyrics & a popular sample of a Deniece Williams hit...perfection.

IF YOU WERE MY MAN - another smart sample use of Evelyn "Champagne" King's "Betch She Don't Love You". Although I could do without the Missy Elliot shout-outs, this is a fun track to listen to if only for the sampled beats.

MIRROR - features the "synthy" sound that so many artists are incorporating now but this track is just ok for me. The lyrics are strong but it's not one of my favorites.

HERE I AM - another great ballad

SUPERMAN - wow!

LOVE ALL OVER ME - double wow!! Excellent 2nd single choice. And on a personal note, I don't know why I was shocked to see Jermaine Dupri listed as one of the songwriters given the fact that he has surprised me previously as one of the songwriters for a few Mariah Carey songs that have become my favorites. This song is absolutely beautiful every time I hear it or the video comes on I find myself stopping what I'm doing to just enjoy the song.

BELIEVING IN ME - another vocal knockout! Another song with great, heartfelt lyrics and Monica singing her heart out.

Congrats to team Monica for putting her back in the forefront of r&b female singers and although we can foretell that Alicia Keys will clean up at the Grammies, I certainly hope that this album is recognized as one of the best most cohesive r&b albums of this year.

4 out of 5 stars Monica Believing In Herself   August 15, 2010
Andre S. Grindle (Brewer Maine)
It's been about five years since Monica last bought us any new music with her previous album The Makings Of Me and no matter how you cut it the period about five years before that proved the turn of the millenium just wasn't her decade personally. Well she found a new love in her life and has taken some time off to raise her now two children so here we officially have the birth of Monica:the grown woman. The interesting part of this is,and the reason I will deduct a star from this album is that Monica has versatile vocal style that is more than a little suited to broader, funkier music. On the uptempo songs on this album, including the title song and songs such as "Mirror" Monica is producing herself with a very very generic commercial hip-hop sound that interesting enough forces her to sing at a pace a lot faster than normal to accomodate the brittle beats and because of the emphasis on beat rather than rhythm Monica's instrument is smothered by the need to speed up her singing and her special vocal qualities aren't as evident as they should be. Particularly difficult to listen to are the abrasive and by-the-numbers posturing rap on the title song which, even for someone like myself whose open minded to hip-hop kind of emphasizes a lot of the negative modern clishe's of the genre and isn't very welcoming musically. The rest of the album, however is a different story. Her interpretation of Evelyn King's somewhat unheralded "If You Were My Man" from the mid 80's get's an appropriate musical backup as Monica more fully explores her range. It's fitting that she chose a song by another former teen soul singer who not only helped pave the way for people like her but who managed to keep up with the times successfully even if her commercial fortunes often abandoned her. Even on the uptempo songs that lack in rhythmic intricacy the lyrics on this album are always arresting and compelling. On the midtempo ballad material such as the wonderful "Once In A Lifetime","Superman","Love All Over Me" and the closer "Believing In Me" the music takes on a slicker flavor that favors Monica's style a lot better than the overproduction on some of the faster tunes. On the concluding song her lyrics actually take on the topical stance of the modern 30 something and the general rebirth of the "me" generation wherein, for better or worse the selflessness involved in romantic relationships has again given way to a "me first" attitude. Even though Monica means what she's saying, the reservation in her vocally delivery on the song isn't lost on me anyway. This is probably the best kind of album Monica could release at this particular time as contemporary R&B,stuck in a strong holding patter for the last decade or so is starting to adapt different elements into itself in order to keep itself fresh. If she expands the slicker elements of her music continually on her next album or two rather than keeps maintaining links to overly bomastic modern hip-hop productions she will definately be onto something.

5 out of 5 stars Monica: After 15 Years She Is Still Standing!!!!   July 9, 2010

WOW. This album is so good, I can barely put it in words. I have always been a Monica fan. Her music is always very deep and something the people can relate to. However on this album, she really opens up her heart and soul and puts all of her emotions out there. This is her best album yet and if you don't have it, hurry up and get it. Now, with her first single "Everything To Me", she is pretty much showing how she is in love with someone and how much she really loves them and what they mean to her. My favorite tracks are "Love All Over Me" and "Mirro". When I hear "Love All Over Me", I go in to my own world and think about the love that I have for that special someone in my life. With "Mirror", its a song that will lift you up. It makes you look at yourself differently in a more positive way. Learning to love who you are and the skin you are in without dressing it all up is what people have a hard time doing. These are the type of songs that plays in your head over and over again because they are that good and you will never get tired of them. Keep doing your thang Monica. You're on your grown woman now and I'm loving every bit of it. Like I said, if you don't have this album, go and get it.
