One of the most common complaints about musicals is that the books are flimsy pretexts from which to hang numbers. Wicked runs into the opposite problem: it has a great plot, but too often the songs just get in the way. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz. And the show is lucky to boast a pair of ace leading women in the main roles. As Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth delivers a sensational star turn, displaying a crystal-pure voice and sharp comic timing; Idina Menzel lends her powerful pipes to the tricky role of Elphaba. Unfortunately, you wish they had better material to work with. Stephen Schwartz's pop score is often dragged down by overly synthetic orchestrations and sentimental lyrics (think Chicken Soup for the Witch). Still, at its best Wicked is a seductive slice of popular entertainment that could well give a younger audience a lasting taste for musical theater. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

2 out of 5 stars My favorite part GONE!!!   August 20, 2010

I love the play!! but one of my favorite parts was completely gone!! the part where they are dancing when Galinda gives Elfaba the witch hat as a joke and she ends up dancing with Elfaba and then they all start to dance with them, the start of it is shown the the camera goes down and the the rest of the scene is omited!!!!! I was VERY dissapointed!! and most of the time all you see is where the face of each actor is a big shining light so you can't see their faces. it was ok BUT NOT WORTH THE PRICE!!!!!!!!

Exceptional recording of the original cast of the hit Broadway show! Everything about this set is exceptionally handled. The special bonus recordings and variants in foreign languages are fun as well. Definitely worth it's weight in green!

I just saw this yesterday in San Francisco, so I might not make perfect sense. Forgive me in advance. I didn't know what to expect, as I had not read the novel. I wasn't prepared to be so emotionally moved by the performance! The voices, the score, the set, the costumes were so much more....and the story. The story was written by a genius, to be sure. A story that I think we are all so familiar with, this made me feel like it was written first. The songs were a beautiful continuation of the story, leading us. Not any filler songs that could be done without. You must see this to understand the reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Reminder   July 14, 2010

I originally purchased this CD after attending Wicked in Chicago. Since than my CD has seen a lot of use in my car. I recently purchased another copy from Amazon (much cheaper) because my first one was starting to get a bit worn.

If you have seen the play you will enjoy this CD a good deal - it's filled with the songs but none of the conversations (well, the bits that are in the middle of songs are in there).

If you haven't seen the play this may be a little confusing but the songs are good by themselves, just you may not be able to follow the plot as well as someone that has seen the play.

The songs vary slightly from the live versions, but that's only because it seems, at least to me, that each location, Chicago or SF (the two places I've seen it) perform the scores just slightly differently based on the musically abilities of the leads.

All and all it's a great CD and well worth having, more so if you enjoyed the play.
