4 out of 5 stars Best Metal Record of 2010   September 4, 2010
Jason A. Hoese (Washington DC)
Another High on Fire classic. Can't find fault with any track on the record with Snakes for the Divine, Frost Hammer, Fire Flood and Plague and How Dark We Pray being the standouts. Now, go see them live!

4 out of 5 stars Rise Up! Fall Down!   July 30, 2010
Mike (Here and There)
I was driving through the mountains in California when a dense fog started to interfere with my path. I had this CD playing when it kicked in and I tell you; if it were anything else, it wouldn't have seemed like an adventure of epic demon-slaying proportions, and that's why I have to recommend this CD!

I love big bands, but the trio of Matt Pike, Jeff Matz, and Des Kensel can keep doing their thing. Though well produced, the band manages to pull it off live (I've seen them twice and they were excellent both times), giving the listener an album that can and will be performed as expected should the listener decide to engage in the live experience.

So what's it sound like? A raw punk/metal/thrash/doom experience complete with solos, double bass, slamming bass, and the most hessian vocals you can expect to accompany it all. I like the title track the best.

If you like real metal and not the watered down stuff (kinda like going for the regionally brewed IPA as opposed to the mass-produced nonsense) then you'll like this. Raw, chaotic, yet very cathartic, High On Fire doesn't fail to deliver.

4 out of 5 stars nine string special   June 27, 2010

This album is another fine production from a band who continues to hone their skills and shred like mad. Matt Pike is playing a custom 9 string, that's right 9 strings! As High on Fire is a power trio it is up to Pike to provide a lot of background noise which he happily does. While not as technical as "Death Is This Communion" or "Blessed Black Wings" this latest album showcases the progress made by every member of the band. Strong vocals, ripping guitar and a back beat that drives your heart through your chest is the best way I can describe this newest album. If this is your first taste of High on Fire you will not be disappointed. Prepare to be amazed by how much sound three talented musicians can make.

5 out of 5 stars Hellishly divine   June 23, 2010
[Manife§t] (Goth Forest)
This album literally salutes everything in Sabbath-esque metal and stoner rock. Thick, chunky guitar riffs and heavy tempos blow the mind for ultra-heavy decibels of whirling solos (note the intro riff on the title track). After this every track gives way into deeper-chugging drug rock. Singer / frontman Matt Pike delivers once again his coarse, gravely voice to embed in stone that this is definitely a masculine band. Here I have a track breakdown:

1. Snakes for the Divine - 10/10
2. Frost Hammer - 9/10
3. Bastard Samurai - 10/10
4. Ghost Neck - 10/10
5. The Path (KILLER instrumental interlude) - 10/10
6. Fire, Flood & Plague - 9/10
7. How Dark We Pray - 8/10
8. Holy Flames of the Firespitter - 10/10

There you have it rocker ladies & gents. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Good Metal   May 31, 2010

I am getting a little older and thought my metal days were behind me, but I read that this album was good for working out, so I bought it. I was really stoked because it kicks ass. I really enjoy the guitar work and the drumming. The vocals get a little "cookie monster" for me, but mostly they are good. I do agree, I put this CD on my I-pod and it helps get by ass in gear for working out. Highly recommended. In fact I liked it so much I bought another album of theirs, Death is the Communion, and I liked that a lot as well.
